Meet our new Sponsored Artist: Mazon

Meet our new Sponsored Artist: Mazon

Feb 10

What’s going on Mazon, let’s jump right into it: you were recently a guest on Shade 45‘s “Sway in The Morning” – could you tell us a little bit more about that experience and how it came about?

My manager used to intern for Sway at MTV and always stays in tune to what he was doing in the music world. She heard about the opportunity Sway had on his show for artists to send their music and possibly get airtime and feedback from callers all over the country. Honestly .. a New York number called my phone early in the morning and I usually wouldn’t answer but something told me to pick it up. So, I did and it was somebody from Shade 45. It was dope to talk to Sway and Dev, mainly because I used to watch Sway on MTV growing up like everybody else. People from all over called in and gave me feedback on “Fine Linen” and an exclusive joint that I’ll keep in the tuck for now.

What kind of artists did you listen to growing up, and how has that impacted your music now?

When I was around 5 or 6 years old, I was really into Soul For Real .I was always fascinated by the kids of the music industry like Bow Wow and Usher, when they first started. I remember being into Snoop too when I was real young. I was always a fan of his flow. When I was was with my mom, I would hear everything from Prince to Kraftwerk. My pops listened to groups like The Gap Band and a lot of Shabba Ranks. During my crucial “growing-up” years, I was bumping Nas, Jay-Z, J. Dilla, Ghostface, Styles P and a lot of Jeezy.

Having an eclectic ear for various genres and styles of music definitely adds to my complexity as an artist. It makes it easier to collaborate with other artists and creates musical challenges that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

Okay, so here’s something getting away from the basics: when, and with what equipment, did you record your first rap song?

Haha. My first song was definitely on a tape recorder. Me and a couple of my homies went into the school’s choir room. We locked ourselves in there with a couple tapes, some pen and paper and a tape recorder from the 90′s. Classic material that I’ll never be able to find.

You do a great job keeping up with your fans on twitter and facebook, which is always a great thing to see in young MC’s. What do you eventually want to see come of all this hype you’re creating for yourself?

I eventually want to be able to touch all of these people that support my music online and in the streets. By touching them, I mean doing shows in their city and giving them something to aspire to. I represent the 717 area of Pennsylvania. The ghost area with no voice. Philly got Meek and Pittsburgh has Wiz. It’s time for somebody to hold it down for us.

Right on. As your success increases, who do you want to collab with in the future?

Recently, I’ve had this goal to do a joint with Meek Mill and Wiz Khalifa, solidifying that PA connection; something the Keystone would be proud of. I know that I’ll eventually work with J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar. I get a lot of dope ideas when I listen to those cats. It’d be a sin not to do some work in the future. Big dreams of working with Kanye, Dr. Dre, Nottz, Justice League and Hi-Tek. My list of dream collabs is incredible. You wouldn’t have enough time to read it.

For all the old – and new – Mazon fans, what can we look forward to in the future? You have any projects under works?

Definitely! Look out for some great music this spring and summer. I’m releasing a couple projects on my own as well as producing under the name Sling Lord whenever my services are required.

Any shoutouts? Keep grindin’ man, appreciate the time! We look forward to working with ya more in the future!

Gotta shout out to Feed Me Flow.com! As always, I’m representing The Nosebleeds and The Phli Hi Club with no hesitation. Feed Me Flow Interview: Cali Kid Dubz

Let’s start off with the basics for all the readers of FeedMeFlow: Where are you from?
Piqua, Ohio

Right on. So — who influenced your style? And who do you listen to now as a continuing influence?
I have a lot of different influences mostly people from the new generation of greats like Drake, Wiz, Big Sean, Cudi, the list could go on and on. I listen to a lot of different music though. From The Weeknd to ASAP Rocky, from T-Pain to Kendrick Lamar! I listen to these people on a daily basis.

That brings me to my next question: How do you separate yourself from the other rappers in the game?
I feel like I just do me and the music will speak for itself. I try to do a lot of different things also. I don’t like to consider myself a “rapper” I prefer to be called an artist.

Alright, so – what are your thoughts on the current state of the game?
I think the current state of the game is fine. Of course its not like the old “hip hop” that everyone loves but this is a new generation! I honestly can say I love the state of the game right now….wouldn’t change it for the world.

Your videos for Flyish and My Nuvo are gettin’ up to the 5K view marks — congrats on that! As your success increases, who do you want to work with in the future?
I’d like to work with a lot of Ohio artist making a name for themselves right now! In my opinion this is Ohio’s time and working together would only help our state get noticed.

What are some current projects you’re working on? Give us something to look forward to!
My 2nd mixtape entitled “ La Vida Buena” drops February 29th. I just dropped the last single called “Heath Ledger” with a pretty sick video shot by my dude Dan Gotti. You can check that out on youtube just search “Cali KiD DuBz” and you should find it. Great things to come.

That about wraps it up – thanks for your time! Any shoutouts? Keep doing your thing man.
Dz nutz aannnnnnnnd….my team Dream Famous. Follow me on twitter @Calikiddubz! Thankyou for the interview and your time!

Interview – Calvin Scruby

Interview – Calvin Scruby

Jan 26

Calvin Scruby has impressed the audience ladies and gents. The young rapper has sensational lyrics that boggle the mind in such a way it ought to be a crime. His mixtape was just released called, “Best Foot Forward” and believe me it’s definitely something to blast. I interviewed him to get his opinions on the rap scene and such.

Where did you grow up?
I was born in Lenexa, Kansas; my family moved to Cincinnati about ten months later. I spent my elementary school days in Landen, Ohio; it’s a small town north of Cincinnati. We moved out to the country when my mom went back to school.

When and why did you start rapping?                                                                                                                                                                     In grade school, I got into all the poetry projects and realized I was pretty good at it. I’ve always been a rap fan, but I think Wale’s wordplay intrigued me the most. Had to try it. I liked it.
In your opinion how has the Rap/Hip-Hop Scene grown?
It’s broad now. I don’t have much appreciation for some of it, but you have to respect it. Everyone has his or her niche in music. The Internet has been a huge boost for people who want to share and make music – I think that’s great. If you want to make music, you should do it. Even if you’re the only person that really likes it.

Who are your inspirations?
My brother is probably the coolest dude I know. He has always encouraged me to rap, and he’s actually damn good at it too. My parents are incredible people; I can put a lot of things to words (kinda my thing), but I’ve never been able to express how much I appreciate what they do for me. My friends inspire me most frequently though. I wouldn’t be doing it if not for their encouragement. (I also wanna thank the people who “dislike” my material. I appreciate the feedback, definitely inspires me. You suck though.)

How have you grown as a person by doing something you love, rapping?
As I said before, music can help you find yourself. Sometimes I’ll look at my music and say, “Damn, I don’t like those bars. I don’t even like that message. Why are you even doing this?” But in contrast, it’s a great feeling to write something bonkers and not care what people are gonna think about it. I think it’s kinda ballsy to put out music, because when it’s out, everybody is going to judge you for it. It’s inevitable. So it has made me comfortable with who I am. I accept who I am, which I don’t think I could say before this experience.

If you had to tell your listeners one piece of advice what would it be?
It’s music. Listen to it, relate to it, have fun with it. If you don’t like it, click “dislike.” If you like it: play it, share it.

Like his attitude? Want to check out his music? Download the mixtape, Best Foot Forward. Like his Facebook page as well.
